Revival

The rhyme and rhythm in this one is just fascinating...

She Threw It All Down the River
(K. Monteno, performed by INDEXI)

There she stood in the middle of the garden like the fairest flower,
Like a figment of my imagination, music's finest hour,
She listened to my song, the last one I sang under her spell,
She used to be my life, my beloved, yet now I bid her farewell.

She sailed through my dreams in a mere blink,
Mine she was in flesh and blood, I was hers, the unbreakable link,
She carried our love, our joy, the first bud waiting to unfold,
Yet she threw it all down the river and departed for another world.

Chorus:
But tonight if she's listening, let her hear the pain,
In this song I sing for her, and for her only, in vain
Forever may she bear a mark across her heart,
For she threw away one life and tore it apart.

She sailed through my dreams in a mere blink,
Mine she was in flesh and blood, I was hers, the unbreakable link,
She took away our love, our joy, the first bud ready to unfold,
And she threw it all down the river and departed for the nether world.

A strange thing happened to me last night...

I was being my systematic self, again. I started compiling songs that I would translate into a single document and I was trying to be alphabetical about it so, naturally, I started with Azra. Suddenly I realised I was copying down almost every even remotely translatable song. What can I say, Johnny's a genius. An unsurfuckable genius. :D

Pavel
(Azra)

Paris gave itself to you
A piece of the sky forever
What ails you at the end of the road
Do you remember Spain
I wonder if you'd ever
Go into the trenches again

Oh, Pavel
The monster's at the door

You talk about the idea
The patriotism of a generation
Was it the interests of useless people
Or something worth dying for
Let's talk about freedom
Do you remember Spain

Oh, Pavel
The monster's at the door

Here we go again...

Just when I thought I gave up on this. Just when my creative self went for a nap and my systematic self organised this blog, my creative self woke up and meddled in.
Anyway here's another one. It's a bit different this time. I have a message hidden in it. Semi-inadvertantly, though, I must admit. Moodswinger should be able to spot it. It's a nuance a really, a tiny little modification in the translation, a glitch in the system...

Blues for My Former Darling
(Bijelo dugme)

I'll never come back to my home town
There's no one waiting for me there
All the faces have faded away
And I've forgotten all their names
Only sometimes in winter
While the winds mourn for the days
I remember you, you, my former darling
And some tenderness from long ago
Something whispers in my heart and I know
That in this world I am alone

And if I saw you again
What could I tell you about myself
Except that I met a lot of people
But not a single one was my friend
That I was both hungry and famous
Joyous and wretched, miserable and glorious
That I was adored by many, many women
But I couldn't love a single one
Then something whispers in my heart and I know
That in this world I am alone

My darling, my darling
Former darling
My darling
And here I am
A tired old man
Although I still look young

Back with a vengeance

Zoe is proud to present a true pearl of lyrics translation. Moodswinger has outdone himself yet again. He says he hasn't just done Bajaga justice but has been generous on top of it. I absolutely agree. But to me the incredible thing is that the song is "singable" even in translation.

(Also, please note that the title of the song is "linked" to a transcript of its original lyrics.)

Blue Saphire
(M. Bajagic)

Where do you go with darkness beaming from your eyes,
And whose is the name that on your lips resides,
Tell me, who is the one who crumples your bed sheets,
And harbors the golden keys
To the secret chambers of your heart.

Let me trail you on every journey that you take,
Blessed is the one with whom you spent your nights awake
Let me shadow you and don't be wary
Lest you feel solitary,
As you walk on the water and the air.

Come on, my blue sapphire,
Come on, my longing, my desire,
Come on, come here and stay by my side.

Through the Gate of Nations mighty drafts and winds still blow
It's right where we came through many centuries ago,
Pray tell me, who is the one who crumples your bed sheets,
And harbors the golden keys
To the secret chambers of your heart.

Come on, my blue sapphire,
Come on, my longing, my desire,
Come on, come here and stay by my side.

A STRANGER IN YOUR OWN TRIBE
(Major)

what happened to that day
when medals shone in the sky
someone stole your body's quiver
someone stole your breath away
someone said the heavens will forgive
I don't feel it
and everything repeats itself
Shalom has spoken out
and many simple souls burned
in the infernal flames of destiny
and the smoke rose to the heavens
will it come back

miserable ideals, on the bottom of the ocean
the worst thing to be is a stranger in your own tribe

say what you feel
when medals shine in the sky
why are you lost as you take off your clothes
why do you make me lie
what's love, why ask me
I don't feel it

miserable ideals, on the bottom of the ocean
the worst thing to be is a stranger in your own tribe

I'll just let these speak for themselves...

WHEN THE HILLS ARE BURNING
(Major)

why do you scream at me
I despise your voice
your children, your dreams
your acts my river
full of mire and dead fish
doesn't want your sea
your space
I am I, hands of a murderer
I am I, hands covered in blood
from your words, your thoughts,
your dreams
don't sleep when the hills are burning
soldiers' boots trample
their masters
fight against each other
watch over my city
and when they come back
they'll be crazy, maybe just like me
from your words, your thoughts, your dreams
don't sleep when the hills are burning

Sometimes I think...

...summer would not exist without Oliver Dragojevic. Or in any case, it would not be the same.
This is another one of moodswinger's brilliant ideas. And it makes sense, really, I mean you just can't do Zdravko and leave out Oliver.

Dobro jutro, tugo
(Z. Stipisic)
[as performed by the immortal O. Dragojevic]

Good morning, heartache,
Where have you been hiding all along?
I haven't seen you in a while by my side.
Remind me whom you've been with
So I can break in two halves
Split by jealousy.

Good morning, sorrow,
Where have you been hiding all along?
Looks like scirocco's gonna start today,
Remind me whom you dreamt with
So I can split in two halves
Broken by jealousy.

I'm still mad but I haven't moved on a bit,
Didn't blink an eye when you ran away with him,
Never will I confess how I let my hand slip
To cover a single teardrop I shed over you.

Moving on...

This is getting ever so slightly eerie... I'm not a tremendously big fan of Zdravko Colic, or at least not beyond what was implanted in my veins by a trasistor playing beside my cot. Still, if I had to pick one song... this would probably have been it.

You Run through My Veins
(S. Kovac)

Your gaze caresses me
As if to touch me
And each time feels like the first time,
This will stop, I keep thinking
Just like that, it will keep sinking
But the lust so strong remains
You run through my veins.

So many long years
Of giving and taking
I remain the last and the first one
For you I dream of Gypsies
And think of sweet deceptions,
But the devil's grip still reigns,
You run through my veins.

If they take you away
The Gypsies with fortune-telling cards
If they seize you
Those dreadful Harem guards
If they take you away
I will grow insane,
Without you,
I can't ever begin a new day

If they take you away
It will all fall apart
Remember me as a friend
Cherish me in your heart

Even then when too late it seems
For our dreams

For everything

obnoxious comment by zoe: the fortune-telling Gypsies... erm... I always thought it was more wandering Gypsies, a sort of a nomadic connotation. Love the "devil's grip still reigns" though.

This blog goes both ways

Inspired by moodswinger yet again! Though... I'm not too thrilled about the result... some things just sound "wrong". Still, I hope the criticism won't be too harsh (hint, hint).

U2 - JEDNO

Je li ti bolje...
Ili se jos uvijek isto osjecas
Hoce li ti sad biti lakse
Kad imas koga kriviti
Govoris...

Jedna ljubav
Jedan zivot
Kad je samo jedna potreba
U noci
Jedna ljubav
Dobijemo je da je dijelimo
Napusti te, duso, ako
Se ne brines o njoj

Jesam li te razocarao
Ostavio ti gorak ukus u ustima
Ponasas se kao da nikad nisi imala ljubav
A sad hoces da ja zivim bez nje
Pa...

Prekasno je
Veceras
Izvlaciti proslost na svjetlo
Mi smo jedno, ali nismo isti
Dobijemo se
Da se nosimo
Da se nosimo
Jedno...
Jesi li dosla po oprostaj
Jesi li dosla da prizivas mrtve
Jesi li dosla da izigravas Isusa
Pred gubavcima u svojoj glavi

Jesam li suvise trazio
Vise od mnogo
Dala si mi nista
Sad je to sve sto imam
Mi smo jedno
Ali nismo isti

Pa,...
Povrijedimo jedno drugo
A onda ponovo
Ti kazes
Ljubav je hram
Ljubav je visi zakon
Ljubav je hram
Ljubav je visi zakon
Pozoves me da udjem
A onda me tjeras da puzem
I ne mogu se uhvatiti
Za to što imas
Kad je sve što imas bol
Jedna ljubav
Jedna krv
Jedan zivot
Moras uciniti ono sto treba
Jedan zivot
Jedno s drugim
Sestre
Braco
Jedan zivot
Ali nismo isti
Dobijemo se
Da se nosimo
Da se nosimo

Jedan... zivot

Jedno
